Book Nook

There are many books that I will eventually get around to reviewing. There are many that I've read that are also part of amazing series. I'm going to take today and review one particular one that was written by an actor.

Book: A Grimm Warning
Series: The Land of Stories
Author: Chris Colfer

WARNING – THIS CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS. READ THE FIRST TWO BOOKS FIRST:
THE WISHING SPELL
THE ENCHANTRESS RETURNS

This is the third book in the series. It follows twin siblings, Conner and Alex Bailey in the further studies of stories.
After defeating the Enchantress in their last adventure together, Alex decided to stay behind in the Land of Stories to study alongside her grandmother to become the next Fairy Godmother. With Conner, their mother and Bob returning to the normal world; the portal between worlds was sealed shut. They can still contact each other via a magic mirror.
However, things never stay the same forever.
When Conner is invited to Germany with a few other classmates it’s the chance of a lifetime! There are three new Brother’s Grimm stories that have been sealed away until today. With a big reading sponsored by the local university it becomes an event easily sold out to fairy tale enthusiasts and book lovers alike.
But the first two stories sound exactly like the ones Conner wrote about for school. When the third one is too similar to his friends from the Land of Stories for comfort; not only that but there’s a warning about an invading army.
With time running out he races around Europe with a friend from school, trying to uncover the clues left by Mother Goose.

I won’t give too much more away, but pick up this series if you want a new take on the Fairy Tale world, and the Brothers Grimm.

Book Nook: Classics Corner: A Book Review!

Well, it's been a week. Rough and rather frustrating.

The last book that I finished was the second in a rather spell-binding series. Each book in the series can be found on my new favorite book site: Thrift Books (if you spend over $10 - which is ridiculously easy to do - you get FREE shipping. Textbooks are also part of their stock, so win!)

The first book takes you on a dive down a rabbit hole and into a realm unlike any other. And any other other than Lewis Carol's realm. This are slightly more topsy turvy in this Wonderland than was believed or imagined by the whimsical author. Instead, it's dark place, inhabited by neatherlings.

A.G. Howard has come to be one of my favorite authors. The first book in this series was brilliantly done, and I loved her take upon the wonder that is Wonderland. The vivid colors she painted for the wonder realm left my imagination on a high overload.

Please, before reading this review (which WILL contain spoilers) - go and read "Splintered", which came out in February of 2014.

WARNING!
HERE, THERE BE SPOILERS!

"Unhinged", which came out in January of 2015, is the second book in the Splintered Series.

This time we follow Alyssa Gardner as she's finishing up the last week of high school. It's been a year since returning from the dreaded Rabbit Hole and Wonderland. Choosing to live her life out as a human, she's determined to keep her netherling side from coming out.

However, when have things ever gone as planned?

Being the new Red Queen has come with a few powers that Alyssa was not prepared for. When her mosaics at school begin revealing the future of Wonderland, she realizes things all might not well that ended well since coming home.

With Morpheus still in the human realm and causing her regular brand of mischief, she's uncertain as to his intentions. When an old toy clown begins following her around town, she's positive he's the one behind it - who else by this netherling could cause such havoc and mischief?

And then there's Jeb. She still hasn't told him about their trek through Wonderland last year, or how she took his memories of that trip away from him. She think's there's still time when he suddenly begins painting scenes of their trip to regain the crown. He's beginning to remember, but it's coming at a cost.

The previous Queen Red is coming to the mortal realm - to regain the host that narrowly escapse so she can regain the crown for herself. Bringing with her an army to wreck havoc on the world Alyssa loves and is a huge part of.

The last player in the game is Alyssa's mother, Alison. She's back from the asylum, but keeping secrets. She's bent on keeping Alyssa from ever setting foot in Wonderland ever again - but she's also keeping other secrets. Secrets that involved the Quest for the Crown, how much she truly knows about Wonderland, her own powers, and Alyssa's father Thomas Gardner.

With the setting in their Texan hometown, there's a frantic race to finish school, save her realm from an invasion of netherlings, keep her boyfriend, keep away from Morpheus, and go to prom. Just an average for a half-netherling half-human Queen.

The ending will have you spinning round, eager and frantic to get your hands on the third installment. I know I am.

Pick up a copy of "Splintered" and it's subsequent sequels to find out how it all started, what happens next, and how will it end.

Book Nook: Of Grave Concern

Over the last few weeks I have had the pleasure of reading and finishing a few different books. Allow me to introduce you a a rather paranormal western.

Today's novel will be:

Book: Of Grave Concern
Series: Ophelia Wylde Paranormal Mystery #1
Author: Max McCoy

Ophelia Wylde is a woman of twenty and eight years and already a widow. As with many other women who've lost their husbands in the great Civil War, she's distrought about the loss of her husband Jonathan. Every single woman who lost a loved one has turned to Spiritualism to try and have one last word with their beloved.

Having been tricked once already, Ophelia is now a Spiritualist in search of one final Seance that will allow her to speak with Jonathan. However, on her way to that final session she's waylaid in Dodge City, due to an uncanny resemblence to a murderess from the prarie.

With her friend and companion Eddie (quoth the raven, literally), Ophelia becomes entrangled in an old murder when she sees the ghost of a girl that was murdered.

While trapped in Dodge she keeps up her work as a Spiritualist, all the while trying to figure out a way to clear her name. (Email and phones hadn't been invented yet, so trying to find a source is impossible.)

While Spiritualism is a scam, and Ophelia knows it, only one other person in town seems to know it. Jack Calder is a bounty hunter, here to keep an eye on her so she doesn't run. However when a reading goes wrong and she's buried six feet under - literally - the dead start speaking. They have dozens of things to say.

There is a twist at the end, which I won't spoil for you. Pick up a copy of "Of Grave Concern" today!
