OMD: Treasure of the Skies

With school finally over with, I have the time to get things done again. However, that doesn't mean I'm still on top of things. With that in mind, there is a film that is considered to be rather obscure by tons of people.

It came out in 2002 and is only an hour and a half long.

Based on a beloved novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, this film immediately captured a place in my heart.

Treasure Planet is based on the novel Treasure Island (see what they did there? Awesome!).

Right, so because this came out in 2002... Spoilers.... obviously.

We start out with the story of Captain Nathaniel Flint, a ruthless space pirate who would attack the merchant vessels, stealing all the treasure aboard and then vanishing without a trace.

Flashforward about 10 years or so and we meet up with Jim Hawkins. He's a rebel who works at the Admiral Benbow Inn with his mother. When a ship crashes onto the docks, Jim helps in Billy Bones who informs him not to trust the cyborg.

The Benbow is attacked and set aflame. With the help of Doctor Doppler, they escape with the map to Flint's trove of a thousand planets.

Jim and Doctor Doppler set out on a voyage to reach the treasure, hiring the vessel R.L.S. Legacy (named for the author), captained by Amelia.

When Jim is placed as Cabin Boy he is sent to work in the kitchen with Long John Silver; a cyborg.

Through the journey to Treasure Planet, they encounter a star going supernova, which is then swallowed by a Black Hole. During this crucial moment, Jim is tasked with ensuring everyone is secures to the ship. One of the crew, Scroop takes this chance to cut the line on Mr. Arrow the second mate, dooming him to the Black Hole.

We see the character development of Jim as he tries to become someone better than he was, watching this play out as he takes responsibility.

Upon reaching the Planet with the loot of a thousand worlds, the villainous Silver and his men fly their true colors. Jim, Captain Amelia, and Doctor Doppler escape with the map to the planet. It's revealed the map is still on the ship and they have to go back up and get it.

While looking for a place to lie low Jim encounters B.E.N. short for Bio-Electronic Navigator. A robot missing his memory chip.

While hiding Silver comes down to bargain, and Jim realizes they don't have the map either.

Later that night he sneaks back aboard the Legacy with Ben to find the map. The encounter Scroop which ends with him being sent off into space with the pirate flag.

Back on the ground, they find Silver has taken over and captured the doctor and the captain. Working together they find the entrance to the treasure hold - the center of the planet.

Walking in they find the remains of Captain Flint, who holds the missing memory chip of Ben. When Jim reinserts it, Ben remembers the booby trap Flint sent for anyone who entered the treasure room. On cue, the room begins to fall apart, bursting into flame.

To find out what happens next go pick up a copy of "Treasure Planet".

OMD - Blackbeard's Ghost

Walt Disney.

Back in the day they had come amazing, original movies come out. Some of the live-action ones were sadly forgotten by everyone. Others received the "Remake" treatment; losing their originality and wonder.

I will gladly admit that when the release of the release of "The Curse of the Black Pearl" came out I was on the pirate bandwagon all the way. I went to the library and checked out every book on pirates I could get my hands on. By the end of the school year (not telling which), I was an expert on the subject of pirates and all the rowdiness they stood for.

Suffice it to say: Disney's pirates were 300000000% nicer and tamer than the pirates of Golden Age. Honestly! Back in the day pirates were feared for more than just taking your gold and silver. And the worst of the worst was Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard.

Which segues into my Obscure Movie -

Growing up this was one of my favorite movies. It had snarky humor, cool costumes, an AMAZING bed and breakfast that I want to buy and live in for the rest of my life, and pirates.

Oh. And a Pirate's Curse.

What more could you ask for in a movie?

Follow the misadventures of a track coach who comes into town and accidentally unleashes the ghost of Blackbeard.

With clean humor, fun puns, and the stereotypical film of it's time, this movie is excellent for anyone with kids.

Oh. And did I mention - a great Halloween flick?

Check it out on YouTube, or Netflix.

Renaissance Festival - Pirates Weekend Part Two!

....

Once officially shod in my new rope shoes, I went through the rest of the day in ease. It hardly felt as though I were wearing any at all. BONUS: To clean, stick in the wash with your jeans and towels, AIR dry.

Throughout the day I purchased a new dagger (with the medical caduceus on the sheath!). There were a few other little things I picked up through the course of the day; a pendent necklace, rose hair picks.

The main events were, as always, on par. The entertainers, performers, and singers ensured those in the audience were sent away with a smile on their face.

While exploring the Pirate's Ship for additional weaponry to add to my safe guard, I ran into a best friend of mine. We joined forces to explore the remainder of the faire together!

Through a few distractions, we finished our circuit of the grounds. Going back through I picked up the various shiny-ies that I'd previously had my eye on.

There was a exploration into buying a tail . . . until we ran into another friend. While chatting the remainder of our party showed up. Introductions were made, smiles passed around, and a rather lengthy conversation of The Phantom of the Opera ensued. After which, we bid our farewells and the first friend and I headed towards the tails shop.

There was none there which would suit me, though it was fun exploring the "Dead Animal Shop". (Seriously, this was how I was introduced to the shop. It freaked me out a little, but the slogan, "Come pet dead animals" was rather intense.)

While I decided ultimately against getting one, my friend was okay with it.

Instead of staying until the end, we exited midway through the afternoon. None too soon too!

We reached our humble little home and then -

WHAM!!

Pouring rain.

Well, this ends the amazing Renaissance Festival 2017!

Tune in next week for Momocon Recap! (Which I did last week......though I might do a bit more and add a few pictures . . . or not.)

May Day

I know that May began yesterday, but I simply couldn't resist adding this little video to the May lineup.

With summer gearing up there are dozens festivals, outdoor concerts, and various theatre troupes getting ready for the masses.

While I would love to list all of them that are close to you, I don't know where my reader is hailing from. :)

The nearest city I'm close to is Atlanta. With that said, here are a few great conventions or festivals that you can find in the Peach state's capitol.

MoMoCon

This even first began back around 2005. It began with the Anime group at Georgia Tech. What first started out as a few rooms on the campus is now a large event which takes place at the Omni Hotel and Georgia World Congress Center. It began with free entry (which I loved!) and is now about $20 - $60 (depending on how many days you wanna be there). It's coming around at the end of May 24-28th. Great for anyone who loves cosplay and meeting their favorite voice actors.

Spirit of Sweet Auburn

Ever been down a 150-foot zipline? There's always a first time. Come down and enjoy the Southern hospatility. Good food. Great company. Haven't been yet myself, so little information.

Marietta Greek Festival

OPA! Come on down for authentic Greek food, entertainment, and shopping. Enjoy this cultural exchange and learn about those form the Isles. Make sure to come hungry.

Georgia Renaissance Festival

Turkey Legs! Knights in Armor! Pirates! Highlanders! King Henry! Musketeers! This is the place to be. Only open on the weekends, and Memorial Day from the end of April to June, this is not an event to be missed. There are various vendors who you can watch work at their craft. Entertaining shows with wit and acrobatics! Be prepared for a full day out, as it's an outdoor event. You can exit the park throughout the day and return. From 10:30 - 6, it's the best way to check out the Renaissance!

What are some of your favorite festivals? Places you love going to when the summer heat gets to be too much? Leave a comment. :)
